Just Transition

Introduction

The increase in global temperature is more and more noticeable, harming our environment and our lives. The adverse effects of conventional energy sources on the ecosystem have underscored the urgent necessity for alternative and renewable energy solutions to address the imminent challenges of climate change. This urgency has prompted various industries to explore innovative approaches in order to limit their carbon emissions.

In an era of rapid transformations, where the shift towards environmentally friendly practices is gaining momentum, it is imperative to ensure that this transition is inclusive and just, leaving no one behind. My story revolves around the often-overlooked impact of the green transition on seafarers, the silent heroes of the energy transition. As we embrace new technologies and alternative fuels and look for new energy sources, it becomes paramount to consider and prioritise the welfare, safety, and rights of these key players who navigate the seas and contribute significantly to global trade and sustainable practices.

A green transition is a necessity but, most importantly, it should be a just transition. Seafarers are key players when it comes to an energy transition, and their rights must be protected.

Storytelling Intro

Through this story, I aim to shed light on the profound impact of the green transition on the lives of seafarers and their crucial role in shaping a sustainable future. I am inspired by my own experience as a seafarer attending a ‘green transition’ conference, where the speakers overlooked the concerns of seafarers and focused only on technical issues. At the conference, the only concern was to identify suitable fuels, commercially viable technologies or well-established alternatives. This experience illuminated the fact that seafarers’ concerns were overlooked and that their perspectives were relegated to the periphery. As a result, I was driven to raise awareness about the importance of a truly just transition – one that includes the voices of all stakeholders and considers all needs. This story seeks to inspire, encourage, and engage the audience in understanding the challenges faced by seafarers and the significance of safeguarding their rights in the journey towards a greener world.

Reflections

My storytelling journey about the just transition and its effects on seafarers has been eye-opening and enlightening. It has allowed me to witness the struggles and challenges faced by dedicated workers in an era of environmental transformation and it has made me think about the importance of a fair and just transition and the role that groups, such as unions, play in promoting it.

The key takeaway from this experience is that the green transition should be approached with an inclusive mindset, ensuring that no individual or community is left behind during this transformative journey. We all have a role to play and a word to say. My advice to the audience is to be conscious of the far-reaching consequences of the decisions we make during this transition and to advocate for the protection of the rights and wellbeing of all those involved.

What's Next for Me

Inspired by this impactful journey, I am resolutely dedicated to persisting in advocating for a just transition. My aspiration is to take on a leadership role in advocating for the rights of seafarers and ensuring that their concerns are acknowledged and addressed during environmental discussions. Empowered by a newfound skillset, I now feel equipped to amplify my efforts towards advancing my colleagues’ rights. I have acquired the means to use innovative tools to broadcast our stories, advocate for our causes and amplify our voices.

Looking ahead, my vision, aspirations, and dreams focus on a future characterised by the harmonious coexistence of sustainability and social justice. Within this vision, seafarers’ invaluable contributions shall be duly acknowledged and esteemed as catalysts for shaping a world that is cleaner, safer, and more equitable.

After learning about my story, I would like to ask you if you have ever considered the green transition’s impact on workers in industries like shipping and maritime? How do you think we can ensure that the journey towards sustainability is inclusive and fair, safeguarding the rights of all individuals involved? I welcome your thoughts and reflections on this crucial topic of a just transition.
